Hon’ble CM of Delhi Visits KISS; Promises to Visit Again
Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi visited Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a sister concern of KIIT, on 29th April, 2010. Congratulating Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS for creating this unique institute for deprived tribal children, she said that it is a symbol of progressive India.
KISS is the largest tribal institute in Asia providing education (from KG to PG), vocational training, residence, food, health care and all other basic necessities of life to 10,000 tribal children free of cost.
Interacting with the rugby player of KISS selected to play in the Commonwealth Games, she assured hospitality for the player and the contingent accompanying him in Delhi.
She visited classrooms, vocational training centres, computer labs and other facilities created for tribal students. She also interacted with the students of the institute. Dr. Samanta explained her about the educational facilities and employment opportunities for the students of the institute. He also outlined the students' achievements in the fields of academics and sports.
The Hon’ble Chief Minister was touched by the social role of KISS and promised to visit again with her grandchildren later in the year and spend more time with the tribal children.
Earlier, welcoming her to KISS, Dr. Samanta expressed his heartiest gratitude for her visit. It is a big motivation for the tribal students and staff of KISS, he added. |

Wipro Mission 10X Concept Centre at KIIT
A Mission 10x Concept Centre was inaugurated by Mr. Selvan Dorairaj, Senior Vice President, Talent Transformation, Wipro Technologies and Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions at KIIT on 26th April 2010. It’s the first one of its own kind in Eastern part particularly in Odisha, while there are almost 4 centers in India. KIIT University is the front runner in the entire country in Mission 10x, an initiative by Wipro to improve the teaching and learning process. Concept centre is a place where the faculty, student and curriculum development programmes of the mission 10X will be rolled out not only for KIIT University, but also for all the other partnering institutions of the mission in the eastern region. The aim is to cover 10,000 faculties. Eight thousand faculties have been covered so far.
Mr. Selvan Dorairaj said that in association with KIIT, Wipro will take more way this faculty development programme and the aim of to cover 10, 000 faculties will be fulfill very soon. Announcing the initiative conceived by the global IT services company, Dr. Samanta expressed hope that the faculties and students of different technical institutions of Odisha will be benefitted by the Mission 10X. It is the pride not only for KIIT but also for Odisha, he said. A lab with all modern techniques provided by Wipro inaugurated at KIIT. In this regard an agreement also signed between Wipro and KIIT.
Mission10X is sensitive to the contemporary intellectual developments in the human and social sciences and derives its essence from multiple disciplines, methods and approaches. It organises workshops to encourage the faculty members of engineering colleges to go beyond their conventional teaching practices and experiment with innovative learning techniques. This helps in bringing about a change in the ecological unit.

1,30,000 Candidates to Appear KIITEE '10 on 2nd May
KIITEE ’10, the all India test for admission into different courses of KIIT University, will be held on 2nd May 2010 at various test centres across the country. A total of 1,30,000 students from different countries have applied for KIITEE '10. Out of this, 30,000 applicants are from Odisha, whereas Bihar accounts for 26,000 applicants. There are 25,000 applicants from Uttar Pradesh and 20,000 from Jharkhand.
It is the first time in the country so many students are writing entrance test of any institution. The test will be conducted in 120 centres across the country, out of which 20 are in Odisha. About 12,000 applicants will write the test in KIIT centre. In addition to engineering, MCA and biotechnology, admission into the M.B.B.S. and B.D.S. courses will also be done through this entrance test this year.
The University authorities have made application to this test free of cost and online for last two years. This has relieved the guardians of financial burden. An increasing number of students are eager to pursue their higher education in KIIT due to its modern teaching methods, green eco-friendly campus and excellent campus placement.
Like last year, 25% seats in KIIT are reserved for the students of Odisha. For smooth conduct of the test, biometric system has been introduced for verifying identity of the candidates. The KIITEE '10 result will be declared on 16th May and counseling for admission will start from 1st week of June, informed the Admission Department of KIIT University. |

KIMS student topper in 1st Professional of MBBS Examination, 2009
Ms. Anindya Nayak, a student of 1st year MBBS of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has secured 1st position in the 1st Professional (2nd semester) of MBBS Examination, 2009. Earlier, she received Prof. Sanatan Pujari Memorial Gold Medal during 42nd Convocation of Utkal University which was held on 17th April, 2010. 450 students of SCB Medical College, High-Tech, ITR and KIMS under Utkal University had taken part in the medical examination in which Anindya top ranked by securing the highest number.
Anindya attributed her remarkable achievement to hard work and the pedagogy at KIMS. This news sent in a ripple of happiness among KIIT Officials such as Prof. A. S. Kolaskar, VC, KIIT, Prof. S. C. Das, Pro-VC, KIMS, B. C. Das, Principal, KIMS, other students and parents.
Congratulating Ms. Nayak, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions said that she has made KIIT proud and her achievement will encourage other medical students of KIMS. |

KIIT Student Selected for Commonwealth Scholarship
Ms. Namrata Kar, a final year student of B.Tech in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, has been selected for the Commonwealth Scholarship by Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom. As many as 250 students from all over the world, including 24 students from India, have been selected for this prestigious scholarship.
Ms. Namrata Kar is the only one student from Odisha who got this achievement. She was selected following an interview by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. The interview was to select both general and technical students for the scholarship.
The scholarship will give Namrata a chance to pursue postgraduate study and research in Signal Processing and Communication in England.
The news of her success in the interview resulted in a wave of happiness among the students of KIIT. Congratulating her, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions said that her achievement has made KIIT and Odisha proud. Prof. (Dr.) Hari Gautam, Chancellor, KIIT University and Prof. A. S. Samanta Made a Member of Central Forest Right Committee
In yet another important committee formed by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) in association with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KISS & KIIT has been made the only member from the state of Odisha. The Ministry of Environment and Forest notification dated the 11th April 2010, while informing the reconstitution of all important 19 member committee, clearly states that the committee shall study in details the implementation of Forest Rights Act-2006 including the factors aiding and impeding its implementation and recommend necessary policy change in the future management of the forestry sector, besides other issues like identifying opportunity for the tribals, programmes for Forest Rights by stakeholders, etc. Samanta will hold the office for a tenure of three years initially.
Expressing his happiness over his inclusion in the most important committee constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, Samanta said that he will contribute towards the policy and programmes keeping the interest of the state and its tribal population at the fore.
Meanwhile, Samanta has been nominated as the President’s Nominee to the Academic Council of the Assam Central University. In recognition to his contribution in the field of education, the President of India has bestowed this rare honour on him, informs a communication from the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. |

KISS Shares Values of ‘American Dream’: US Ambassador
Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) provides education to the underprivileged and opportunity to them to be what they want to be, said Mr. Timothy J. Roemer, His Excellency the U.S. Ambassador to India. He was on a visit to KISS and KIIT University on 7th April 2010, the first visit of an American Ambassador to Odisha in 12 years.
Inaugurating English Access Micro-Scholarship Program Centre at KISS, he said the Program builds proficiency of English among the learners, thus, opening floodgates of opportunities before them. Further, it imparts shared American-Indian values of democracy and tolerance, he elaborated, adding that one of the key deliverables of this Program is that it would lead to jobs.
English Access Micro-Scholarship Program, sponsored by US Federal Government, was launched in KISS on 1st December 2009. It facilitates English language study to 100 tribal students of the institute for a period of two years.
Drawing a parallel between the values of ‘American Dream’ and Dr. A. Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, he said that Dr. Samanta is working to realize the dreams of thousands of underprivileged children by providing education and opportunities for employment. He congratulated Dr. Samanta for ‘walking alone’ to establish this remarkable centre of education. Mr. Roemer also unveiled a plaque in his honour in KISS campus.
Talent reflects on the smiling faces of these tribal children and they are the ones who would help propel India on global stage, he stated. In coming years, success of this institute would attract attention of many dignitaries of the world, he hoped, while adding that it is an honour to partner with KISS.
The institute translates into practice Gandhiji’s thoughts that every single individual matters and you be the change that you wish to see, he said, while informing that these thoughts are inspiration for President Obama as well. Mr. Roemer also interacted with World Cup Rugby Champion Team and achievers in different fields of the institute. He mingled freely with the tribal students, teachers and staff of KISS.
The US Ambassador also delivered a talk on ‘Strategic Dialogue and Education’ in KIIT University and participated in a baseball game with the students.
Earlier, welcoming Mr. Roemer to KIIT and KISS, Dr. Samanta said that his passion for strengthening people to people ties and concern for poor is well known. Mr. Roemer’s expertise extends from education to counter-terrorism, he informed adding that he is credited for several novel initiatives in the field of education in the U.S. Dr. Samanta provided a brief introduction of KISS and informed that plans are underway to replicate the experience in 20 districts of Odisha and five states of the country.
