UN Recognises KIIT University
 
KIIT University has gained recognition of UNESCO-based International Association of Universities (IAU) recently. IAU was founded by UNESCO in 1950 as an international centre on higher education. It has more than 600 members from about 150 countries. Members of this prestigious organization include international accredited and full-fledged universities.
 
KIIT, which was declared a university in 2004 under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, drew attention of IAU due to its excellence in professional education, research and training. It selected KIIT for membership after a thorough review of its works and achievements spanning one and a half years. IAU membership will result in global acceptance of the degrees of KIIT University and facilitate student and faculty exchange programme at international level. It may be recalled that KIIT was also inducted as a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the apex inter-university organisation of India, last month. Membership of AIU and IAU are coveted by the prestigious national and international universities respectively.

IAU selected KIIT for membership after a thorough review of its works and achievements spanning one and a half years.

Based in Paris, France and located at the headquarters of UNESCO, the association aims at giving expression to the obligation of universities and other higher education institutions as social institutions to promote, through teaching, research and service, the principles of freedom and justice, of human dignity and solidarity, and contributes, through international cooperation, to the development of material and moral assistance for the strengthening of higher education generally.

 

Curtains on 92nd IEA Conference at KIIT

The 92nd Indian Economic Association (IEA) Conference-2009 concluded at KIIT on 29th December 2009. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Dr. Prasanna Kumar Patasani, Hon'ble Member of Parliament said that as India lives in its villages, more importance should given to rural areas, particularly agriculture and creation of semi skilled and unskilled jobs. He congratulated KIIT and its Founder, Dr. A. Samanta for organising and hosting this pretigious conference of national importance. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on 27th December 2009.        

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. C. H. Hanumantha Rao said that the inauguration of the conference at the hands of the Hon'ble Prime Minister added a special flavour to it.  He expressed hope that the gathering of eminent economists and distinguished intellectuals from across the country must have deliberated upon the solutions to the economic problems facing the country. Prof. Rao expressed gratitude to Dr. Samanta for smooth conduct of the conference.

It is indeed a matter of great pride for KIIT, a relatively young institution, to organise and host the 92nd Indian Economic Association (IEA) Conference, said, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT and Chief Patron, IEA. He thanked the distinguished guests and delegates for their valuable presence.

Five broad central themes were selected for this year’s IEA Conference. These were Teaching and research in economics in India; Global economic crisis and Indian Economy; Economic geography and development; Structural reforms and agriculture and Aspects of development with special reference to Odisha. Each of these themes was further divided into sub-themes.

Indian Economic Association (IEA), a registered body of the Indian Economic Professionals, was established way back in 1917, with an objective of providing a forum for debate and discussion of theoretical and policy oriented issues of economic science. The IEA organizes annual conferences, special seminars and lectures by eminent persons of the profession. It has organized 91 annual conferences in different parts of the country. The IEA, which is also a member of the International Economic Association, has more than 3000 individual and institutional members across the country. 

About 3000 delegates participated in the IEA conference which was one of the largest gatherings of academicians, economists and researchers in the country.  A large number of eminent speakers and chairpersons spoke at the conference including Prof. C. Chakraborty, Hon’ble General Secretary, IASLIC, Prof. S. Parthasarathy, President of the conference, Prof. Ajun Dasgupta, Conference Director of the Thematic Sessions, Prof. S. C. Computer and internet dominate the new age and libraries should rise up to the challenge, he added. He expressed appreciations for Dr. Samanta for organizing this conference in Odisha.
 
Shri Samal expressed satisfaction over the fact that the conference was well attended by researchers, library professionals and students. Their deliberations will help libraries meet the expectations of digital era, he said. Every Panchayat should have library, he opined.
 
Extending gratitude to the guests and delegates, Dr. Samanta said that organizing this prestigious conference is a matter of pride for KIIT as well as the State of Odisha.

During the last fifty years, it has made stellar contribution in its mission to promote Library and information movement; to improve professional competencies; and to foster coordination and cooperation among the professional associations and organizations. IASLIC has become the leader-coordinator in the field of special librarianship in India. This prestigious Association holds seminars and conferences in alternate years. Current problems of libraries and information services and other allied issues are selected as themes for the discussion on these occasions. As many as 23 seminars and 26 conferences have taken place at different research and academic institutions in various parts of the country till 2008.

 

PM Inaugurates 92nd IEA Conference at KIIT

Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India inaugurated the 92nd Indian Economic Association (IEA) Conference-2009 at  KIIT on 27th December 2009 in presence of Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha. The three-day conference, organized and hosted by KIIT School of Management, KIIT University, will conclude on 29th December 2009.

Hon’ble PM, while inaugurating the IEA Conference, said that global economic slowdown has affected Indian economy for quite some time now resulting in a worrisome fall in the GDP. However, he hoped that the GDP will look up in the New Year as a result of a string of revitalizing measures taken by the government in all sectors of the Indian economy, particularly agriculture. Dr. Singh stressed on application of modern techniques in agriculture. The country's small scale industry needs refurbishment for generation of employment opportunity and thereby give a shot in the arm for the upward swing in the GDP, he reteirated. Dr. Singh lamented that the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India to eradicate poverty is yet to be accomplished, though the country has a come a long way in this direction. The learned economist and premier congratulated Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions for organizing and hosting the IEA Conference at KIIT and wished the conference a great success.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, while addressing the gathering of eminent economists and distinguished intellectuals from across the country, stated that Odisha has been doing pretty well in public health care, electricity production and distribution, education, food production, etc. He asserted that special attention on self employment, creation of job opportunities for the youth and infrastructure development in the rural areas has brought the state on the fast-track for rapid economic development and poverty alleviation. The Chief Minister hoped that the 92nd IEA Conference would go a long way in giving a direction to the planners. He extended his greeting to Dr. Samanta for facilitating the organization and conduct of the conference at KIIT.

KIIT holds First Ever IASLIC National Conference in Odisha

KIIT International School celebrates Third Annual Day
 
The Third Annual Day of KIIT International School was celebrated in its premises on 19th December, 2009. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Anang Uday Singh Deo, Hon’ble Minister of State for Planning & Co-ordination, Odisha in presence of Hon’ble MP Shri Pinaki Mishra, Ms. Bijalaxmi Devi, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions, Ms. Mona Lisa Bal, CEO, Mr. Sanjay Suar, Principal and Mr. Barry David Lewis, Head International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), KIIT International School and other important dignitaries.

Inaugurating the programme Hon’ble Shri Deo,  in his brief and informative speech, described the trust voyage in education and its future plans in upgrading the facilities, expansion of schools, colleges and other activities. He congratulated Dr. Samanta for organising the annual day function wholly with the student's initiative and stewardship. Hon’ble Shri Mishra said that International Schools should target at preparing the children to face the challenges to compete in the global world. Also he praised the efforts of Dr. Samanta and his creation of KIIT as a matter of pride to Odisha, for which Bhubaneswar is known as the education capital now a days, he added.

Addressing the gathering Dr. Samanta said, it is a remarkable day for all of us present here. He also extended his thanks to all the guests for their kind visit to KIIT International School.  

Ms. Monalisa Bal gave the welcome address while Mr. Sanjay Suar presented the Annual Report of the school which highlighted the prominent achievements of the school during this academic year in the scholastic and co-scholastic areas.

The meritorious students who achieved success in various areas including school, interschool, state-level, social, cultural, educational etc were felicitated on the occasion at the hands of the Hon'ble guests. Many cultural programs were also presented by students of the school. It included dances of various regions of India, western dance etc. The students and parents appreciated the colorful and rhythmic presentations with thunderous applause. Among others all the top officials of KIIT and a large number students were present on the occasion.

 

MIRABILIA-09 inaugurated at KIIT

Mirabilia 2009, the annual function of the School of Computer Application of KIIT University, was inaugurated by Shri Praveen Ch. Bhanj Deo, Hon’ble Minister of State for Sports & Youth Services and Revenue & D. M. Odisha in presence of Padmashree Dilip Tirky, Renowned Hockey Player of India Team, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions, Prof. S. C. De. Sarkar, Vice Chancellor, KIIT, Veena Goswami, Dean, KIIT School of Computer Application, Dr.J. R. Mohanty, Associate Dean here on 18th December 2009. This is the 10th annual function of SCA.

Inaugurating the annual function, Hon’ble Minister Shri Bhanj Deo said that computer application has a significant role to play in the area of security. Students of computer applications also have a great role in the economic development of the nation, he told.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Dilip Tirky advised the students to contribute their knowledge for the economic development of our country. Everything can be acheived through computer. KIIT is a world class institution in terms of infrastructure, aesthetics, educational ambience and student strength, he remarked. He also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Samanta for his contributions in the field of education for the tribal children through KISS. Dr. Samanta expressed his heartiest gratitude and thanks to the dignitaries for sparing their precious time to encourage the students.

On this occasion the annual magazine of SCA ‘ZIGYANSA’ was released by the guests. Among others, VC, Dean of SCA and other dignitaries on the dais also spoke on the occasion. A large number of students and staffs of KIIT were present.

 

36th National Junior Volleyball Championship-2009 begins at KIIT

The 36th National Junior Volleyball Championship-2009 was inaugurated by Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Odisha in presence of Shri Prafulla Ch. Ghadei, Hon’ble Minister finance and Excise, Odisha, Shri Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Hon’ble Minister Energy, Odisha, Shri Praveen Chandra Bhanjdeo, Hon’ble Minister Sports & Youth Aaffairs, Shri Baijayanta Panda, Hon’ble, MP, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions, Mr. Bijaya Mohanty, Hon’ble, MLA, Bhubaneswar Central, Sri Bibhuti Balabantaray, Organizing Secretary, Sri Ashok Chandra Panda, Organizing Chairman, Shri Santosh Paikaray, Joint Secretary, Sri Bishnu Charan Das, Patron, Sri Rajendra Ku. Inaugurating the Championship Hon’ble CM, Odisha said that it is a great honour for Odisha to organize this national level sport event. It will enhance Odisha’s attribute in the field of sport. He also wished all teams for their success. Hon’ble Minister Shri Ghadei congratulated to organizer and KIIT University for their joint initiatives to make this event in Odisha. So it is not less than a proud for Odisha. While Hon’ble Sports & Youth Aaffairs Minister Shri Bhanjdeo said that, this volleyball championship will provide unique platform for volleyball payers and develop their self confidence and social skills to participate in international level.

Dr. Samanta expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to all the guests for giving their momentous time for this occasion. All the Hon’ble guests on the dais also spoke on the occasion.

This is the 2nd national volleyball event to be organized in following the senior national volleyball championship held in the state after 1958.

The championship organized by rules and regulations Vollyball Federation of India. The Federation organized under the banner of Odisha Vollyball Association. And it also organized in co-operation of Odisha Olympic Association. The series will be continued till 24th December, 2009.

 
National Seminar on Industry-Institute Interface organized at KIIT

A National Seminar on Industry-Institute Interface was organized by KIIT University in its premises on 13th December, 2009. Dr. S. N. Dash, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Govt. of India, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the function in the presence of Prof. E. Balagurusamy, Hon’ble Member, Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, Mr. K. Ramamurthy Naidu, Commission Member, UGC, New Delhi, Prof. (Dr.) S. C. De Sarkar, VC & Dr. P. N. Razdan, Pro VC, KIIT.

Inaugurating the seminar, Dr. Dash said that the best technical knowledgeable persons should be applicable into the institutions. Because when proper knowledge is conveyed to the students then, that will transfer to the industry. He also stressed that the curriculums should be prepared according to the necessities of market and industry.

Mr. Naidu said that, he was thrilled to be at this young and most successful institute. The only thing needed to be an entrepreneur is intense will-power and honesty. The faculty and students should make more visits to the industry, as industry-institute interaction is must for the rapid and generous growth of India.

Prof. E. Balagurusamy giving his key note address lighted upon the right attitude towards the relation of industry and institutes, so that the people actually required by the industry could be prepared. Prof. (Dr.) S. C. De Sarkar expressed his gratitude to all the guests, invited speakers and other dignitaries for giving their valuable time for this national seminar.

National Conference on Renewable Energy Held at KIIT

KIIT University organized a National Conference on Future Perspectives of Renewable Energy Sources in collaboration with NABARD on 12th December, 2009. The conference was co-sponsored by SAIL (Rourkela Steel Plant).

The conference was inaugurated by Mr. A. K. Sharma, Director (Production), Nalco in presence of Mr. B. Sridhar, AGM, NABARD, Prof. S. C. De Sarkar, VC, KIIT, Dr. P. N. Razdan, Pro VC, Prof. A. The conference aimed at promoting knowledge sharing and networking among those at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives. Economic, environmental and security concerns have made renewable energy a burning issue, said Mr. A. K. Sharma at the inaugural function. Industries using forest products and manufacturing pulp and paper have to play special role in the development and advances of renewable energy, he said. Focusing on theme of the conference, Prof. A. Dasgupta said the conference would focus on the latest research, development and industrial use of renewable energy.

KIIT signs MOU with RIIHL, Netherlands

KIIT has gone global making its presence felt throughout the world. The university signed a Memorandum of Agreement on 8th December 2009 with Resilience International Institute of Higher Learning (RIIHL), The Netherlands, 40th in sequence, establishing ties for student and faculty exchange programme, R&D exchange programme and knowledge sharing.  The visiting President of the institute Prof. (Dr.) Cees J. A. Torre of RIIHL and also Vice Chancellor, NATO Bloc, OIU and Dr. Fracs Van Dunne, Dean of the Institute expressed deep appreciation for the giant strides made by KIIT Group of Institutions in higher education and tribal welfare. Dr. Lakshman Madurasinghe of Srilanka off campus of RIIHL accompanied the team. The delegation, highly impressed by KISS model have not only admired the efforts but also sought assistance of KIIT Group of Institutions for establishing identical models in Srilanka and other parts of the globe.

Profile of Prof. (Dr.) Cees J. A. Torre, President, RIIHL

Governor Graces KIIT Convocation Ceremony   

Total 1,557 graduates of 2009 batch of KIIT University received degrees and diplomas at Fifth Annual Convocation of the university on 6th December 2009. Shri M. C. Bhandare, His Excellency the Governor of Odisha graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Hari Gautam, Chancellor, KIIT University presided over the ceremony.

Speaking to the graduating students, Shri M. C. Bhandare, Chief Guest of the ceremony, reminded them of their responsibilities towards their parents and society at large. “KIIT uniquely synergizes professional knowledge with social values”, he said, while referring to Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) as the institution’s human face and an expression of its social commitment. He advised the graduates to emulate the values of their alma mater and its Founder, Dr. A. Samanta.

Delivering the presidential address, Dr. Hari Gautam urged graduates to utilize their knowledge and strength to uplift the socially-challenged, adding that this is the best way to pay back to their alma mater and Motherland. He expressed confidence that they will bring glory to themselves, the university and the country by their contributions.
 
KIIT University has stepped up its institutional and industrial partnership programme, informed Prof. S. C. De Sarkar in his Vice Chancellor’s Report, adding that MoUs have been signed with as many as twelve international universities. Two new schools - School of Fashion Technology and School of Film and Media Sciences – have been started in the current academic year, he informed.

English Access Microscholarship Program Launched at KISS

US Embassy sponsored English Access Microscholarship Program was launched in Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) on 1st December 2009. The programme was formally inaugurated by His Excellency Sri Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, Hon’ble Governor of Odisha in presence of Shri Prasanna Acharya, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Public Grievance & Pension Administration, Odisha, Ms. Beth A. Payne, US Consul General, Kolkata, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions and Mrs. Saswati Bal, President of KISS.

KISS has been selected by the US Government as an educational service provider in India for the English Access Microscholarship Programme - an initiative of the United States Embassy in New Delhi and the United States Department of State. The programme for KISS is the first ever by American Government for any tribal institute in India. English Access Microscholarship Program provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 14 to 18 years olds from disadvantaged sectors and gives participants English skills that lead to better jobs and educational prospects in their future endeavors. Under the programme, Ambassador of US to India will facilitate English language study to 100 tribal students between 14 to 18 years of age at KISS for a period of two years, beginning December 1, 2009.

Inaugurating the programme His Excellency Shri Bhandare said that this novel programme will hone skills of the tribal students of this institute to compete in global job market. He praised efforts of Dr. Samanta for empowerment of tribal children and youth through education. Shri Bhandare also participated at an AIDS awareness programme organized by KISS and KIIT on the occasion of World AIDS Day.

Shri Prasanna Acharya, Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Public Grievance & Pension Administration, Odisha emphasized the need for effective English communication skills in the contemporary world. He expressed confidence that this programme will prepare tribal students in written and spoken English. Through education and leading by example, we empower our youth, family and friends with the right information about HIV/AIDS that they can use to make safer and healthier lifestyle, he also said.

Elaborating on the benefits of the programme, Ms. Beth A. Payne said that a better-educated workforce with international skills can attract increased investment and create new jobs. This will strengthen democracy and civil society and broaden the access to the world, she added. She distributed certificates to 100 students who have received scholarship to learn English under the programme. Speaking at the function to observe World AIDS Day, Ms. Payne emphasized on promoting awareness among women on HIV/AIDS.

Expressing his gratitude to the dignitaries, Dr. Samanta said that the programme will prove to be a major strength for KISS in its mission to bring tribal children and youths at par with mainstream society
