English Language Training Workshop Concludes at KiiT International School

An English Language Training Workshop, organised by KiiT International School, concluded here on 31st July 2010. Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS, Ms. Mona Lisa Bal, CEO, KiiT International School and Mr. Sanjay Suar, Principal, Mr Craig Patterson, Head International Curriculum graced the valedictory ceremony, which was attended by the trainees and the resource persons.

The workshop provided teachers an opportunity to learn and teach English better. It helped teachers accept phonetics and understand nuances of modern English language. Resource persons like Mr. Cray Staggs, US Resource Person, US Department of State Senior English Language Fellow for Beijing, China shared their experiences during the workshop.

The workshop was useful in equipping English language teachers with effective methods, resources, practical ideas and activities that they can implement in their own classroom situations, said Dr. Samanta.

A Teachers' Forum was formed in the workshop, where teachers can familiarize themselves with current methodology and practices of English language and seek practical solutions to the problems they frequently face in the classroom. Mr. Cray Staggs distributed certificates to the teachers. Many teachers about from 20 different schools, colleges and universities of all over Odisha attended the two-day workshop.
Asia’s Best Social Entrepreneur Award Conferred on KIIT & KISS Founder

Dr. Achyuta Samanta has been awarded the Asia’s Best Social Entrepreneur for the current year by the World HRD Congress. The award was conferred on him at a ceremony organised in Singapore on 23rd July 2010.

Dr. Samanta has received wide recognition at national and international levels for establishing KIIT, a centre of excellence in professional education, and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a path-breaking model of tribal empowerment through education. Coming out of a childhood which was marred by poverty due to untimely demise of his father, he demonstrated immense determination to set up the two institutions in Odisha, one of the most backward States of India.

KIIT, which has the distinction of being declared a university in shortest possible time due to its excellence, is leading Odisha's march towards becoming an educational hub in the country. On the other hand, KISS, which provides education from KG to PG, vocational training, residence and all the basic necessities of life to 10,000 tribal children at no cost, has come to be regarded as a highly effective and internationally replicable model of tribal empowerment.

He was chosen for Asia’s Best Social Entrepreneur Award after a thorough investigation of his background and achievements by the award committee. Members of the jury arrived at the conclusion after judging him on five stages. The award ceremony was attended by renowned personalities from different countries of Asia. Delegates present on the occasion gave him a standing ovation as the citation of the award was read out.

Intellectuals' circle in Odisha was overjoyed at the news of this recognition for Dr. Samanta. The award for Dr. Samanta is a pride for the State, they said.
Volunteers from Hanseo University Visit KIIT & KISS

A 20 member student volunteers from Hanseo University, South Korea are on a visit to KIIT and KISS from 20th to 29th July, 2010. The volunteers visited different campuses and interacted with the students.

This is the third visit of student-delegates from Hanseo University to KIIT & KISS as per the MoU signed before between KIIT and Hanseo University. It provides student exchange and faculty development programme and to promote cultural exchange between the two countries.

During the ten days visit, the volunteers participated in a lot of social and cultural activities at KISS, like, plantation, assisting for the preparation of the dinner for KISS students and game practice with the students of KISS, and vocational training like hair cutting & Taekwondo training etc. Their activities also included interaction with KIIT students and a day-long rural area visit to Kalarabanka, a model village developed by Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS. Hanseo University has taken the responsibility to build a tailoring Unit at Kalarabanka.

The Korean students also visited tourist places like Puri and Konark. By this, Odisha now became a prominent tourist place in the fame of tourism among the world. Today, Hanseo student-delegates are felicitated in a felicitation ceremony at KIIT. Hanseo University also felicitated by giving scholarship to 12 highest number securing students in different classes of KISS.

From the sources, Dr. Samanta signed a MoU at South Korea, as per the agreement, 150-200 Korean students will visit KIIT and KISS every quarter for learning English and Odissi dance. This way, about 500 Korean students will visit KIIT and KISS every year. Dr. Samanta expressed his gratitude to Dr. Ki Sun Haam, Founder and Chairman of Hanseo University for extending helping hand in social service.

The visit will further strengthen the relations between the two universities and increase awareness about cultures of the two countries among the students, said Dr. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS.
Under-20 Indian National Rugby Team 13 KISS players in Training camp

The Under-20 Indian National Rugby Team has been selected for to participate in Asian Championship to be held at Laos from 17th to 21st August, 2010. Thirteen students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a sister concern of KIIT, have been selected for the training camp to represent the Indian National Team at the Asian Championship.

The training camp for the selection of Indian Team that will travel to Laos for the Rugby Championships will be held in Balewadi, Pune from 25th July to 15th August, 2010.

The students are provisionally selected for this championship are Babula Melaka, Bhagabata Murmu, Chhitaranjan Murmu, Kanhu Charan Hembram, Rajkishore Murmu, Niranjan Biswal, Barial Beshra, Basu Hembram, Bikash Chandra Murmu, Muna Murmu, Bukai Hansdah, Prakash Chandra Murmu and Ganesh Hembram.

Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KISS and KIIT Group of Institutions expressed satisfaction over the remarkable achievement of the students of KISS.

100-yr-old undergoes hip surgery at KIMS

Hundred-year-old Govind Chandra Swain, who lost all hopes of standing on his feet after suffering a fractured hip, was able to finally walk home after undergoing a successful surgery at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneswar, Swain’s family said he became bed-ridden after several hospitals refused to operate on him in view of his age. As a result, his condition started deteriorating. Finally they decided to bring him to KIMS, where joint replacement surgeon Dr. B.K.Behera gave them hope. “We had never thought that he would start walking after only three days of operation. It seems like a miracle,” said a family member. A team of doctors, comprising anesthetist Dr. J.C. Mishra, Dr. A Behera and joint replacement surgeon Dr. B. K. Behera, who replaced head and trochanter of his right femur with a femoral prosthesis. The operation was done under the supervision of Dr. U.N. Mishra and Dr. B  Panigrahi and CEO, KIMS, Dr. R. N. Samanta. “ Earlier, Plates and screws were used for fracture in older patients. After such an operation, a patient usually takes at least three months to recover. Then again, there is possibility of the surgery failing to yield the expected result, But the replacement surgery can enable a patient to walk on the third day of surgery,” said a doctor.

These kinds of rare and complicated surgeries can be done in good quality hospitals like KIMS which has  efficient anaesthesia team and good ICU set up along with an advanced orthopaedic centre for all complicated fracture treatment and joint replacement surgeries.

“BAHUDA YATRA” concludes at Shri Vanikhetra of KISS

The Bahuda Yatra, the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra peacefully concluded at Shri Vanikhetra of KISS on 21st July, 2010. The Pahandi’s several rituals of deities like Mangala Arati, Mailama, Tadapalagi, Rosha Homi, Abakasha, Surya Puja, Dwarapala Pooja etc began from the early morning as per the ethics and rituals of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath Temple of Shri Khetra, Puri.

After the observance of holy ritual of Cherapahanra Ceremony by Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions, the three chariots pull started from the deities’ aunt’s house, which is situated at KIIT premises to Shri Vanikhetra at KISS. There were more than thousands of local devotees, staffs and students of KISS and KIIT who gathered to observe the Bahuda Yatra at KISS. Several other programmes like Bhajana, Kirtana, Prabachana and other cultural programmes were organised between the period from Ratha Yatra to Bahuda Yatra held here.

ICC Organises Strategic HR Summit in Association with KIIT

Indian Chamber of Commerce in association with KIIT University organized a Strategic HR Summit’ in Kolkata recently.

The summit successfully addressed issues ranging from employee engagement and developing effective communication to identifying employee skills and further leveraging such critical skills for developing an appropriate work culture in contemporary organizations.

Addressing the august gathering at the Inaugural Session of ICC’s 4th Annual Strategic HR Summit 2010, Dr. A. S Kolaskar, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University, said that with the Indian Economy springing back to an impressive growth performance after surviving the acute Global Financial Crisis, demand for higher and professional education has skyrocketed. This has put immense pressure on the education sector as a whole to provide the requisite skill development and training tailor made for the industry, he added.

A deeper industry-academia engagement is of utmost importance if the requisite excellence in educational standards has to be maintained, he concluded.

Maintaining a similar perspective, Dr. Giri Dua, Chairman, TASMAC, noted that the recovery process has brought hiring trends back in the industry. Mr. Jayanta Roy, Senior Vice President, ICC, in a highly illustrative theme address, underscored value creation through skill training, employee empowerment, providing the right work-life balance and a friendly trust based working environment.

Among the other eminent speakers who attended the Summit and shared their rich insights, were Dr. Sridhar, Executive Vice President, ITC, Mr. R. P. Ojha, Executive Director, Power Grid and Dr. Pulak Das, Professor IIM, Calcutta.

Industry – Academia Collaborations Stressed at NIPM Bangalore Chapters’ Golden Jubilee Meet

National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM), Karnataka Chapter celebrated its Annual Day on 10th July 2010. The event coincided with the 50th year-Golden Jubilee of NIPM-Karnataka Chapter. The Chief Guest of the function was Mr. K. Byregowda, Hon'ble MLA, Bangalore who stressed the importance of values in every walk of life. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. M. Chandrasekaran, Corporate Advisor, Manipal Group on the topic ‘HR Challenges in the New Millennium-with Reference to Business Imperatives, Adherence to Values, Work Life Balance and Social Responsibility'. Dr. A. S Kolaskar, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University spoke on the industry academia collaboration for better results and effective contribution. An impressive audio visual presentation covering the 50 years of NIPM's existence and the good work which the forum has done so far was also shown.

Prof. Kolaskar opined that the industry can closely work with the academia so that their requirements can be well prepared and groomed by the institutions and universities. He stressed that there is a necessity of the corporate working hand in hand and in collaboration with the academic sector. He invited the HR Managers to visit the campus of KIIT and experience the good work the University has undertaken. Prof. Kolaskar also emphasized on the fulfillment of the social responsibility by KIIT, which has undertaken the upliftment of the tribal children on the basic premises of staying, fooding and education. This is the only one of its kind in the country, he informed. "We have definitely made a good beginning and hope to build up further strong relationships with the HR fraternity," he said.

KIIT co-sponsored the Annual Day celebration which was well attended by at least 300 to 350 professionals, including HR and other professionals. 

Korean University Confers Hon. Doctorate on KIIT Founder

Hanseo University, South Korea has conferred the Honorary Doctorate Degree on Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS. Hanseo University is world famous in the field of aviation training.

Dr. Samanta was conferred this honour for integrating quality education with human values and social service. KIIT has established itself as a centre of excellence in professional education, while KISS is the biggest tribal residential institute in the world. Dr. Ki Sun Ham, Founder and Chairman of Hanseo University presented the Degree to Dr. Samanta at the Convocation Ceremony of the University on 15th July 2010. Mr. S. R. Tayal, His Excellency the Indian Ambassador to Korea graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest.

An agreement was also signed in the presence of His Excellency the Ambassador on ‘Indo-Korean Centre for Excellence’. As per the agreement, 150-200 Korean students will visit KIIT and KISS every quarter for learning English and Odissi dance. This way, about 500 Korean students will visit KIIT and KISS every year.

Hanseo University came into contact with KIIT after learning about qualitative professional education at KIIT and social purpose of KISS. Many top officials of Hanseo University, including Dr. Ham, have visited KIIT & KISS. A MoU was also signed, providing for student exchange between the two universities. Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions expressed his gratitude to Hon'ble Ambassador Mr. S. R. Tayal for his initiatives in bringing the two universities closer.

KIITian Represents Odisha in Indian Youth Delegation to China

Satyanarayan Roy Mohapatra, a 7th Sem. student of Electronics and TeleCommunication, KIIT, is one of the volunteers representing Odisha in the Indian Youth Delegation to China, 2010. The delegation has been hosted by His Excellency the Chinese Ambassador to India, His Excellency the Indian Ambassador to China, leaders of the Youth Federation and Provincial Leaders.

The Indian Youth Delegation to China comprises of 43 young volunteers, six national youth awardees, six young cultural artistes, five Chinese interpreters and three media persons under the leadership of Dr. M. S. Gill, Hon’ble Union Minister, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India,  Shri Pratik Prakashbapu Patil,  Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India and Shri A. K. Upadhyay, Secretary, Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India. Participants were selected from different States and Union Territories after a thorough screening.

The purpose of this Delegation to China is increasing mutual trust, growing shared interests, close cooperation & coordination, mutual respect & mutual benefit. The bilateral economic cooperation has experienced fast growth. The cooperation between political parties, parliaments & two armies as well as in culture, science & technology & tourism fields has also witnessed rapid expansion. Not only that, but also in the regional & international affairs, the two countries enjoy close cooperation on issues such as world trade negotiations, climate change, energy & food security as well as fighting against the financial crisis. Both are committed to working closely and constructively to safeguard the interests of the developing countries.

The delegates, during their ten-day visit, toured Shanghai, Hefei and Chongqing. They were the state guests of China. Their programme included visits to World Expo 2010, training base of sports, Shanghai teenagers extra-curricular activities campsite, Zhujiajiao Town, Oriental Pearl T.V. Tower, Shanghai Municipal History Museum, Yu Garden, University of Science and Technology of China, Zhonghuan Real Estate Company, Pavilion of Culture and Fine Arts and Hefei Metal Forming Machine Tool Ltd., among other places of significance.
Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS, congratulated Satyanarayan Roy Mohapatra on his visit and said that student community in KIIT will learn from his experiences.

“RATHAYATRA” celebrated at KIIT & KISS
 The world famous auspicious occasion of Rath Yatra was celebrated at Shri Banikhetra of  KISS on 13th July 2010 amid religious fervor and gaiety. More than 30 thousand devotees participated in pulling the three decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra being carried on three colourful wooden chariots, festooned with flowers , appliqué and mural paintings .

 The Pahandi and other rituals like Mangala Arati, Mailama,Tadapalagi, Rosha Homi,  Abakasha, Surya Puja, Chariots inauguration etc followed by procession of deities from temple sanctum to the chariots began in the morning as per the ethics and rituals of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagganath Temple of Shri Khetra, Puri.  Thousands of devotees gathered to pull the three chariots in the afternoon after Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT and  KISS performed the holy ritual of cherapahanra, the ceremonial sweeping of the chariots. The special feature of Ghosayatra here is that, Devadalan, the chariot of Goddess Subhadra was pulled by only females.

 Special sculptors from Puri were involved in making the chariots according to the sources. All rituals were conducted under the guidance of Shri Acharya Pandit Surya Narayan Rathasarma. A few years ago, Shri Banikhetra at KISS was set up on the suggestion of Gajapati Maharaja Shri Dibya Singh Dev.

Workshop on Quality Engineering Education at KIIT

A five-day workshop was inaugurated at KIIT University on 12th July, 2010 to discuss high quality engineering education, teaching and research. The workshop is organised in association with the Indo US Collaboration for Engineering Education (IUCEE), a programme conceptualized by over 150 leaders of engineering education and businesses from US and India in 2007 to help create good quality engineering talent in order to find solutions to the global challenges facing humanity such as energy, environment, health and communications. The workshops are being hosted by 22 IUCEE Consortium Colleges at 25 locations all over India.

Deliberation on 'Computer Network' is being held from 12-16 July 2010 in Campus 6, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar. Many faculties from different engineering colleges, both from Odisha and outside are participating in this workshop. Prof (Dr.) Prashanta Mohapatra from University of California, Davis is the Resource Person for this workshop. Prof. Uma Rao, a resource person from IUCEE, is helping faculties to enhance their teaching skills.

World Population Day Observed at KIMS

Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a constituent of KIIT University, organised an Inter University Debate Competition on 'Youth’s Perspective on Population Dynamics in India' on 7th July, 2010. The debate, which formed a part of World Population Day observation, was sponsored by Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh, New Delhi.

Apramita Chanda, a student of R.D. Women’s' College, was adjudged as the winner, whereas Swayanshree Mishra of Revenshaw College and Sarmisha Rout of KIMS bagged second and third position respectively. Winner of the debate competition won Rs. 10,000, and runners up received Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Rabi Narayan Pani, Government Chief Whip, Odisha Legislative Assembly said that population growth has become a major problem after Third World War. It is becoming difficult to fulfill basic amenities of life like, food, health, accommodation and education due to this problem. So awareness programmes should be organized, he said, adding that the programme at KIMS is a step in that direction. Dr. D. Muduli, Special Secretary Technical; Department of Health & Family Welfare also spoke on the occasion.

The world famous Ratha Yatra is the biggest festival in Odisha. This auspicious occasion of RathaYatra will be celebrated at Shri Vanikshetra of KIIT on 13th July, 2010 amid religious fervor and gaiety. Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions will perform the holy ritual of cherapahanra, the ceremonial sweeping of the chariots. The Netrastava and Nava Jaubana Besa was held at KISS premises on 12th July, 2010. The Pahandi and processions of deities from temple sanctum to the chariots will begin in the morning after rituals like Mangala Arati, Mailama, Tadapalagi, Rosha Homi, Abakasha, Surya Puja and Chariots inauguration. The festival will be observed as per the ethics and rituals of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagganath Temple of Shri Khetra, Puri. The special feature of Ghosayatra here is that, Devadalan, the chariot of Goddess Subhadra will be pulled only by females.

More than one lakh devotees are expected to participate in pulling of the three decorated chariots. All rituals will be completed under the guidance of Chief Acharya Pandit Surya Narayan Rathasarma. Hera Panchami will be held on 17th July whereas Chariots Dhakhina moda will be on 18th July, 2010. Bahuda Yatra will be held on 21st July, 2010. Similarly, Suna Besa, Adhara Pana and God’s Niladri Bije will be held on 22nd, 23rd and 24th July, 2010, respectively.
3 KISS students selected for Asian Games Training Camp

For Asian Games-2010, three students of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a sister concern of KIIT, have been selected for training-cum-coaching camp to be held at Balevadi of Pune from 3rd July to 10th November, 2010.

The three students provisionally selected for this camp are Pankajini Majhi (Santal), Bhagyalaxmi Barik (Sabar) and Hiramani Kisku (Santal). These students selected as ‘Core Probables’. This is the preparation for final squad of 12 players to represent the country in Asian Games 2010 to be held at Ghingzhou, China in November. The selected girls would undergo intensive training and would be participating in various International Tournaments leading up to the games. All expenses for travel, accommodation, fooding etc will be provided by Govt. of India, sources said.

Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KISS and KIIT Group of Institutions congratulated the selected players and said that it is a great pride for KISS.
