Free Dental Camp by Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS)

Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS) under KIIT University conducted a Free Dental Screening and Treatment Camp on the occasion of “World No Tobacco Day” at Panchupal, Barang on 31st May, 2013. Around 150 residents of Panchupal village were screened for any dental or oral diseases. All residents were explained about the ill effects of tobacco consumption. Oral mucosal lesions were screened in all patients who had habits of tobacco smoking or chewing. Tobacco associated lesions that were detected in patients were referred to KIDS for further investigations and treatment. Banners were displayed which educated the public about the ill effects of tobacco and how it is one of the major cause of oral cancer. Moreover, a total of 82 free extractions (tooth removal) were done in the camp. Free medicines were given to all those who had extractions and even for other dental diseases. The team consisted of 14 doctors, dental students and assistants from KIDS.

KISS Achieves 97% Success in +2 Exams

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has posted cent percent result in Science, Commerce and Arts streams for the 5th year in a row in +2 Examinations conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha. Result of the examinations was declared today. More than 95% students passed in Science, while students of Arts and Commerce streams achieved 97% result. A large number of students in KISS passed in 1st and 2nd divisions, according to the sources.

It is encouraging that 32 students from primitive tribal group like Kharia, Saria, Koya, Gadaba, Saura, Kutia Kondh and Paraja have passed in Science, Commerce and Arts streams. Seven of them secured first division. In what is a big morale boost for the students of this tribal institute, even those students, who had fared poorly in 10th examinations, have passed in first-class. Five students of the institute have qualified in IIT main examination.

It is a rare feat to educate and groom tribal students from remote areas of the State and enable them to achieve cent percent result every year, opined intellectuals.

Expressing satisfaction over the result, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS said that continued success of KISS students year after year has been possible only due to blessings of God, continuous effort of teachers, staff, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of KISS.

All Kudos to KiiT International School

KiiT International School (KiiT-IS), a constituent of KIIT Group of Institutions, has posted excellent result in the Class XII examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), results of which were declared on May 27, 2013. All students of all three streams – Science, Commerce and Arts – passed in first class securing 90% or more marks. Toppers in Science, Arts and Commerce streams secured 96.56%, 94% and 93% percent respectively.

Even though this is only the second batch of Class XII students from KiiT-IS, a large number of students have qualified for national level engineering, medical and law entrance examinations. The school had achieved very good result last year for its first batch students also. 

In another achievement, the School has been bracketed among Top 20 schools of India in a national survey on public schools in India conducted by Engineering Watch, a prestigious educational magazine.KiiT International School is the only school from Odisha to make it to the coveted list of Top 100 schools out of about 10,000 reputed schools across the country surveyed on the basis of STEM Education, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Future Readiness and Value Centricity.

Mr. Sanjay Suar, Principal, KiiT International School received the award from Chief Guest Shri Salman Khurshid, Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs in presence of Dr. V. Bhujanga Rao, Distinguished Scientist, CC R&D (Naval Systems) & International Cooperation, DRDO; Prof Daya Pant, H.O.D, NCERT; and Shri Santosh Goenka, Executive Director, Business India.

The ranking was decided following a presentation before a high level jury, which included Padma Bhusan Mrs. Shyama Chona, Mr. Pravin Sinclair, Director of NCERT, Dr. Amit Nagpal, Branding Expert, Mr. M. Moni, DG NIC and others, who expressed great satisfaction on the students and teachers quality, and facilities of KiiT-IS. The Creya Learning Studio of the School won special admiration, so was exposure of students to major scientific events like the Indian Science Congress.  

Even though KiiT International School is a new school established only in 2007, its excellence has attracted attention of one and all. Recently, it has become one of the first few schools in the country to be accredited under CBSE International Programme. In the first phase, only 50 schools in the country are to be accredited under this new international curriculum programme of CBSE. Not only CBSE, apex bodies of two international curriculum - The International Baccalaureate (IB), Geneva and The International General Certificate of Secondary Education of University of Cambridge – have expressed satisfaction on academic excellence of the School their annual visits, while certifying KiiT International School as the best IB school in eastern India.        

Recognising the importance of early childhood education, a neglected area in the country, KiiT International School will to train and sensitise teachers, parents and educationists in the state through Association for Early Childhood Development (AECED). It will be the first school in Odisha to undertake this initiative.

Training Programme on Life Skills Education at KIIT 

A training programme for nodal teachers, who have been identified for extension of life skills based Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education in Rayagada and Gajapati districts, was inaugurated at KIIT University by Shri R. N. Dash, Secretary, KIIT & KISS and Dr. Deepa Prased, State Programme Officer, UNFPA Odisha State on 21st May 2013. The training programme is a part of the project to build capacity of the institution and integrate life skills based Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education in the curriculum, being implemented by UNFPA in partnership with Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS).

This novel project was first initiated in KISS in 2009. The resources developed and experiences gained with tribal students of KISS paved the way for expanding life skills based SRH among adolescents in residential schools for tribal and disadvantaged communities in the selected districts of Odisha. During 2012, life skills based SRH education was introduced in 121 residential high schools under ST and SC Development (SSD) Department and 17 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) under School and Mass Education (S&ME) Department in five districts of Odisha. About 25000 students are being imparted with life skills based SRH education by 360 trained teachers in the selected schools.

Encouraged with the success, the SSD Department, Government of Odisha has expressed interest to partner and expand the program in all residential high schools under the department in the state in a phased manner. It is proposed to expand the intervention and cover all the residential high schools under both the departments in the next five years. Following this expansion plan, in 2013, additional 163 residential schools will be covered under SSD and S&ME Department for imparting life skills based SRH education in addition steps will be taken to stabilize the process in 138 schools covered during 2012. KISS will provide the technical assistance through Project Management Unit (PMU) based in the institution.

During the summer vacation of 2013, around 480 teachers from Kasturba Gandhi Valika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) and residential high schools of ST and SC Development Department of identified districts, i.e. Ganjam, Malkanagiti, Kalhandi, Keonjahr, Kandhamal, Koraput and Nabarangapur, besides Gajapati and Rayagada will be trained in 16 batches. This is a residential training programme for five days.

KIIT Bags Prestigious Award

Adding yet another feather to its cap, KIIT University has bagged two Consortium of Co-Chairpersons - Industry (CCI) Technology Education Excellency Awards 2013. Prof. P. P. Mathur, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University received the award from His Excellency Mr. Ndubulsi Vitus Amaku, the High Commissioner of Nigeria in the august presence of Mr. N. K. Goyal, President, CMAI and Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor, Gujarat Technological University at a glittering presentation ceremony in Ahmedabad on May 18, 2013.

The CCI Technology Education Excellency Award is instituted by Gujarat Technological University, jointly with Communication Multimedia Applications Infrastructure (CMAI) Association of India. It is supported by ASSOCHAM , a national chamber of commerce and industries.

KIIT University bagged the awards under the categories of Best University in Promoting Research & Development, Relevant to the Needs of the Society and Best University in Learned Publication in High Impact Journals in Top tier Conferences. The awards recognize the efforts of the University in promoting research, development and publications in world class journals by the faculty.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta Becomes Member of NCTE

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS has recently been nominated as a member of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a statutory body of Govt. of India. A notification to this effect has been published in The Gazette of India, No. 976, dated May 1, 2013. Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India has nominated Samanta to NCTE in recognition of his commendable contribution in the field of mass education. He has become the first Odia to become a member of this body.Dr. Samanta will officiate in this capacity for a tenure of three years and be involved in framing policy on various matters in NCTE. NCTE, the apex body for policy making in the area of school education, has secretary-level officials of Govt. of India and eminent educationists as its members. Samanta has expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India for nominating him to the body.

KSBT Students Awarded Top Innovators Gold Medal

Anurag K Kyal and Subham Debnath, students of School of Biotechnology, KIIT University were awarded the Top Innovators Gold Medal at the Prestigious DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme 2013 from Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Hon'ble Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India at a glittering function held in New Delhi.

They were awarded as the top innovators for developing a technology on producing high quality paper from weeds of different kinds. They completed the project under the mentorship of Dr. Vishakha Raina, Associate Professor, School of Biotechnology.

KISS Boy Selected to Participate in International Rugby Tournament

Muna Murmu, a student of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), has been selected as a probable in Indian Rugby Team scheduled to participate in the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division II Rugby Tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from June 4 – 8, 2013. The participating countries include India, Singapore, Malaysia and Iran.
He has represented India earlier in the Asian U/20 Rugby Championship 2010 held at Laos and KISS Team playing at France in 2009.

KIITians Design Yet Another Prototype Car for BAJA SAE

Students of 2nd Year Mechanical Engineering have achieved significant success in designing a prototype car for the prestigious BAJA ATV competition. The car, which has been completed within a month, roars with a 350cc engine integrated with a compact gear box and differential system. It has centralized steering with all the safety features (as per BAJA SAE rulebook), with a top class double wish bone suspension system, clocking a top speed of 60 kmph.

It is an entirely ‘homemade’ project with almost all parts being self manufactured at the workshop of School of Mechanical Engineering of KIIT University. The students completed the project under the guidance of Prof. Isham Panigrahi, Faculty Advisor and Mr. Alok Ranjan Swain. ‘Team Mechkreation’, as the students’ team is called, is led by Ajit Pandey and has Bishnu Pratap, Binesh, Subham, Amit, Arif, Rajkumar, Prateek, Bansal Raj and Rohit as members.

The project has attracted high commendations from Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder KIIT & KISS, faculty and seniors.

KIIT Becomes India's First University to Implement SAP

KIIT University has become the first university of the country to begin implementing SAP using Big Bang approach. SAP (I) is facilitating implementation work in all schools of the University in four areas - Financial Accounting, Materials Management, Human Capital Management and Students Life Cycle Management.

The kick-off programme for SAP implementation at KIIT University, named 'Eklabaya', was held on 8th May 2013, which was graced by many eminent personalities including Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS and the Vice President (Services) of SAP India.

The Enterprise Applications Management (EAM) Division, KIIT Head and the Programme Manager, Prof. Nihar R. Beura stressed that the implementation will help in integration of all the business processes across the schools and ensure transparency by providing right information to the students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. The Vice President from SAP (I) went on to say that, the relationship with KIIT will go long way. Not only the applications would add immense value to KIIT operations, but would prove to be instrumental in reinforcing the leadership role of KIIT in the education sector, he added.

KIIT School of Fashion Technology Organizes Fashion Show

KIIT School of Fashion Technology organized a fashion show on 4th May 2013 to showcase dress designed by its students. Named ‘Kirti-Kalpana’, the fashion show featured 18 noted models – 12 girls and 6 boys – displaying the outfit collections created by the final year students of 2009-13 batch on the ramp. Each student has designed six outfits and total 16 have prepared their outfits for fashion show.

National level models included Subhamita Pal and Mr. Nanda Majumdar participated as well as 16 model kids from KiiT International School. National juries including Mr. Binoy Jena, Head, PG Department, NIFT; Mr. Budhaditya, eminent actor and Mr. Manas Das, Lakme Fashion designer were present to select the best design. The souvenir ‘Kirti- Kalpana’ also unveiled in this occasion.

Appreciating the effort of the students, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS said, the catalogue reflects high creativity and genius of the students. Mr. H. S. Khatua, CEO, KIIT School of Fashion Technology said, the first batch of fashion technology students expectedly have imbibed and internalized the concept of fashion design per se.

‘Kirti-Kalpana’ will be an annual event of KIIT School of Fashion Technology, where models from across India will join to showcase the products.

KIIT School of Fashion Technology is the first ever institute in Odisha providing four years Bachelor of Fashion Design. Students as a part of their study have to undertake study tour and industry visits, sources said. The School caters to the national and international students aspiring to be fashion design graduates. It is dedicated to creating professionals of par caliber who would like to make a mark in the booming retail sector.

KIIT Students Design Solar Car

Students of KIIT University have designed a solar car in line with the widely presumed future of the automobile industry globally. It is a completely electrical and electronic vehicle powered by solar energy. 

The car, named ‘Yuva’, has solar panels overhead having a power intake of 80W each. Solar panels charge four batteries, each delivering an output of around 40 Amp Hr. “We have synchronized two BLOC hub motors with planetary gear system situated in rear wheels, each having a rating of 250W and 20AmpHr”, said a student of the designing team.

It is a home project guided by Faculty Advisor, Prof. Isham Panigrahi under mentorship of Er. Akhilesh Dewangan. The 24-member team, named YUVA, is captained by Shadab Ahmed and Abhishek Kumar Sinha respectively. The weight of the car is 65 kg, while it can move with a speed of 40 km/hr.

Expressing his satisfaction, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS said that the achievement proves innovativeness of KIIT students. He congratulated the team and its Faculty Advisor, Prof. lsham Panigrahi for their effort and wished all the success in the competitions.

National Softball Tennis Championship Begins at KIIT

Eighth Sub Junior National Softball Tennis Championship, organized jointly by KIIT University and Amateur Soft Tennis Federation of India, was inaugurated at KIIT campus on 1st May 2013. As many as 15 teams, both Boys’ and girls’, from all over India are participating in the championship. Teams representing Odisha, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatishgarh, Tamilnadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Pondicherry, Goa, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are taking part in the five-day sports meet. Dr. P. K. Patasani, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, inaugurated the championship in the presence of Mr. A. N. Jena, Mayor, Bhubaneswar, Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS, Mr. Priyadarshi Mishra, Chairman, Organizing Committee and Mr. N. G Maguana, Vice President, Amateur Soft Tennis Federation of India. Dr. Samanta welcomed the participants and officials at KIIT campus and wished them a memorable tournament.
