Rare Surgery Performed at KIMS

A team of doctors from Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a sister concern of KIIT, has performed a rare total knees replacement surgery. Puspalata Patnaik (55), a resident of Kolkata, was suffering from pain in both knees from 2002. Her condition was diagnosed as can rheumatoid arthritis of both knees. Despite treatment, she experienced more pain and deformity in both knees which was progressive in nature. It affected her daily living activities. For last one year, she was not even able to walk for a longer distance and unable to sleep at night due to pain. She was found to be suffering from secondary osteoarthritis of knees and admitted in KIMS for joint replacement of both knees.

This was after getting information about Joint Replacement Centre at KIMS Bhubaneswar. The patient consulted Dr. B. K. Behera, Joint Replacement Surgeon of KIMS one month back. She was examined and advised total knee replacement (TKR) of both knees at one stage. Subsequently, the patient was operated on 3rd October 2009 and her both knees replaced in one sitting.  This one stage bilateral replacement of knees was done for first time in Odisha by Dr. B. K. Behera of KIMS Bhubaneswar.  The surgery was highly successful resulting  in complete recovery. Now she walks around 50 meters without any pain and support even as soon as the 7th post operative day.

The TKR surgery, a modern procedure, has a high success rate. The advantages of one stage bilateral replacement surgery are many. The patient does not go to OT twice and so does not have to undergo anesthesia twice. It means less expenditure for hospital stay, drugs and less post operative pain.

Dr. A. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions congratulated all the doctors for the successful operation.

Mr. Arputham appreciated the objective and activities of KISS, the largest tribal residential school in the country which provides free education, accomodation and all basic needs to 10,000 tribal children. Overwhelmed at seeing the institute, he was of the view that KISS is the proper platform for tribal children to enhance their hidden talent. Congratulating Dr. A. Mr. Arputham originally belongs to Karnataka where his father worked. At the age of 18 he came to Mumbai looking for a job and stayed at Janata Colony. But the demolition of Janata Colony shook Mr. Arputham and others. It was at this point of time he realised that slum-dwellers had to be organised. Thus, under his guidanceship was formed the 'Bombay Slum Dwellers Federation', which is now known as the 'National Slum Dwellers Federation'. For his philanthropic service Mr. Arputhan received the 'Magsaysay Award' in year 2000.

Earlier, Dr. Samanta, Founder, KIIT Group of Institutions welcomed Mr. Arputham and expressed his gratitude for his kind visit to KISS.
